Bachelor of Communication and Culture

This is a broad multidisciplinary program that requires a minor but no major.

Students complete an approved program equivalent to fifteen full courses with a minimum grade point average of 2.00 consisting of:

  • One half-course in English Literature or other literature.
  • One half-course chosen from Communication Studies 361, 363, 365 or Science 311.
  • An approved Minor Field consisting of a minimum of five and a maximum of six full-course equivalents or 400 hours of specified certificate credit (see Workplace Learning Minor).
  • One half course in computer science. Please contact Jo-Anne Andre in the Faculty of Communication and Culture at (403) 220-7429 or andre@ucalgary.ca. Some doumentation will be required to establish computer competence.
  • General Studies 300.
  • Three full-course equivalents outside of Communication and Culture (but see restriction #2 below).

Restrictions

  1. A maximum of one full-course equivalent physical activity course may be credited towards the degree.
  2. Not more than six full-course equivalents may be from any one Department or from any group of courses that would fulfill a major.

Within the 15 full-course equivalents for the BGS, the above requirements/restrictions must be included.

Intercultural/Language Requirement

Students may fulfill this requirement in one of three ways:

  1. One full-course equivalent in any non-English language or languages.
  2. One full-course equivalent that emphasizes cultures other than the Western European traditions. (Weekend U offers the following courses: ANTH 203, ANTH 303; ARHI 367; ARHI 369; CNST 201; CNST 313; CNST 433; LAST 201; LAST 203; RELS 203).
  3. Term abroad program or international study either through approved individual study or a field school program. This option requires approval of the Associate Dean (Student Affairs and Curriculum).

Further Requirements

  • At least nine full-course equivalents from the Faculties of Communication & Culture, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences with a minimum GPA of 2.00.
  • A minimum of 8 of the required fifteen full-course equivalents must be at the senior level.
  • A maximum of 7.5 of the required fifteen full-course equivalents may be transferred from other institutions.
